Gracious Hearts

When someone calls and hires me to photograph their children and/or family, I like to ask them what made them call on that particular day. It’s important for me to know the answer to this question because there is usually a very good reason ~ sometimes it will be a milestone age or an occasion, but often it is just that one day a mother or father wake up and there it is: that defining moment when they realize that it is all just going by so quickly or maybe they’re having a great year and feeling grateful and the need to document that moment in time for their family history’s sake. Ahhh….yes, this is where the fun begins & I start to design the concept for their session customizing their images to reflect their true nature & lifestyle.
Makes my heart sing…

When this particular client called she used the coolest little phrase that stuck with me throughout the whole process. She described her family as still being in “their own little pod”…two children ~ a boy & a girl ~ under the age of 5…not in the school system or any extracurricular activities that eventually spin you out of “the pod” yet. I loved that.
Boy did I get that.

When we met in her home for the design consultation (this is when a family’s story unfolds ~ as I see their home’s decor, their faces, their treasures) I asked again, “why today?” What? Wait…when I listened to her answer, I knew I clearly had been given a gift. This amazing, gorgeous, young woman had been experiencing serious health issues the previous year which was impossibly tough on her new little family, but is now fully recovered and experiencing a wonderful, healthy, and oh so-grateful-just-to-be-alive year! Whew! So, after we had our round of tears & hugs & knew that the beach was their happy place for a location & where the memories lurked, it was time to document “The Pod” …yes!
Thank you very much.

This is what everyday miracles are made of. Gracious hearts. The celebration of our stories & memories put on paper for future generations to grab hold of as time marches on…when eventually there comes a time that our families need to reference these images for whatever their healing needs are at the moment or in the distant future, the truth is captured there….powerful stuff.
