“Begin doing what you want to do now.
We are not living in eternity.
We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand…
and melting like a snowflake.
Let us use it before it’s too late.”
~Marie Beynon Ray
A few weeks ago I attended a church memorial service for a young woman who died in a car accident at the young age of 23. There are no words to describe the angst. The church was filled to the rafters. The music was amazing, piognant and heart wrenching. The message from the pastor was perfectly comforting.
Then, her stepfather stepped up to the podium, began talking (although I don’t know how) and telling stories of her from birth until her untimely accident.
It was so quiet in there you could hear every tear fall to the ground.
While he told those stories, she was everyone’s daughter. In those moments, she belonged to all of us as her stories were so eloquently brought to life.
There were two in particular that stayed with me that day as I left to go out into my life with all it’s rushing & numbness & momentary safety, because they changed my perception and heightened my awareness as time was suspended into a feeling like moving in slow motion.
The first story was from pre-school or maybe kindergarten when she had gotten a pair of sparkly shoes for her birthday, I think…she LOVED those shoes and wanted to wear them to school every day for a whole week. So she did. The following week her parents got a call from the teacher requesting that she please NOT wear the sparkly shoes to school anymore because all the little girls in the class wouldn’t pay attention ~ they couldn’t take their eyes off those shoes!
The second story referenced the first time she got herself up on a surfboard & shouted “I AM THE QUEEN OF THE WORLD”!!!
Again, big laughter!!
In this impossible, painful moment, we learned volumes from this beautiful, vibrant spirit who let her
light shine so brightly for the short time she was here on this planet…
So, as you continue into your days & weeks ahead remember to ALWAYS wear your sparkly shoes, wear them proudly & loudly and be exactly who you are because you are perfect just the way you are.
